Obama's Farewell Address – Praises Michelle's Service With Tears! [w/ subs]

00:00:00 – [Applause]
00:00:04 – it is that spirit is that Spirit born of
00:00:09 – the Enlightenment that made us an
00:00:12 – economic powerhouse the spirit that took
00:00:15 – flight at Kitty Hawk and Cape Canaveral
00:00:18 – the spirit that cures disease and put a
00:00:23 – computer in every popular it's that
00:00:26 – spirit of faith in reason and enterprise
00:00:31 – and the primacy of right over Mike that
00:00:36 – allowed us to resist the lure of fascism
00:00:38 – and tyranny during the great depression
00:00:43 – that allowed us to build a post-world
00:00:47 – War to order with other democracies an
00:00:50 – order based not just on military power
00:00:53 – or national affiliations but built on
00:00:57 – principles the rule of law human rights
00:01:00 – freedom of religion and speech and
00:01:03 – assembly and an independent press
00:01:05 – [Applause]
00:01:14 – that order is now being challenged first
00:01:19 – by violent fanatics who claim to speak
00:01:22 – for Islam more recently by autocrats in
00:01:27 – foreign capitals to see three markets
00:01:29 – and open democracies and civil society
00:01:31 – itself as a threat to their power the
00:01:37 – parallel each poses to our democracy is
00:01:41 – more far-reaching than a car bomb or
00:01:44 – missing they represent the fear of
00:01:50 – change the fear of people who look or
00:01:54 – speaker pray differently a contempt for
00:01:58 – the rule of law that holds leaders
00:01:59 – accountable an intolerance of descent
00:02:03 – and free thought and believed that the
00:02:07 – sword or the gun or the bomb or the
00:02:11 – propaganda machine is the ultimate
00:02:13 – arbiter of what's true and what's right
00:02:20 – because of the extraordinary courage of
00:02:22 – our men and women in uniform because of
00:02:25 – our intelligence officers in law
00:02:26 – enforcement and diplomats who support
00:02:29 – our troops no foreign terrorist
00:02:34 – organization has successfully planned
00:02:37 – and executed an attack on our homeland
00:02:39 – these past eight years
00:02:41 – [Applause]
00:02:45 – and although
00:02:46 – boston and orlando and San Bernardino
00:02:51 – and Fort Hood remind us of how dangerous
00:02:57 – radicalization can be our law
00:03:00 – enforcement agencies are more effective
00:03:02 – and vigilant than ever we have taken out
00:03:05 – tens of thousands of terrorists
00:03:06 – including been luck
00:03:12 – the global coalition were leading
00:03:14 – against ISIL is taken out their leaders
00:03:16 – and taken away about half their
00:03:19 – territory ISIL will be destroyed and no
00:03:21 – one who threatens America will ever be
00:03:23 – safe and all who serve or have served it
00:03:30 – has been the honor of my lifetime to be
00:03:32 – your commander-in-chief and we all owe
00:03:34 – you
00:03:55 – but
00:03:58 – protecting our way of life that's not
00:04:02 – just the job of our military democracy
00:04:08 – can buckle when it gives in to fear
00:04:14 – so just as we as citizens must remain
00:04:18 – vigilant against external aggression we
00:04:23 – must guard against a weakening of the
00:04:25 – values that make us who we are and
00:04:30 – that's why for the past eight years I've
00:04:33 – worked to put the fight against
00:04:35 – terrorism on a firmer legal foot that's
00:04:38 – why we've ended torture work 2-close get
00:04:41 – mowed reformed our laws governing
00:04:43 – surveillance to protect privacy and
00:04:45 – civil liberties that's why I reject
00:04:50 – discrimination against Muslim Americans
00:04:52 – who are dissipating on
00:05:10 – that's wrong
00:05:15 – that's why we cannot
00:05:17 – withdraw
00:05:19 – that's why we cannot withdraw from big
00:05:23 – global fights to expand democracy and
00:05:28 – human rights and women's rights in LGBT
00:05:30 – rights no matter how imperfect our
00:05:34 – efforts
00:05:35 – no matter how expedient ignoring such
00:05:40 – values may seem that's part of defending
00:05:44 – America for the fight against extremism
00:05:48 – and intolerance and sectarianism and
00:05:53 – chauvinism are of a piece with the fight
00:05:58 – against authoritarianism and nationalist
00:06:02 – aggression if the scope of freedom and
00:06:06 – respect for the rule of law shrinks
00:06:10 – around the world the likelihood of war
00:06:13 – within and between nations increases and
00:06:18 – our own freedoms will eventually be
00:06:19 – threatened
00:06:20 – so let's be vigilant but not afraid
00:06:26 – ISIL will try to kill innocent people
00:06:32 – but they cannot defeat America unless we
00:06:35 – betray our Constitution and our
00:06:37 – principles in the fight
00:06:38 – [Applause]
00:06:43 – rivals like Russia or China cannot match
00:06:46 – our influence around the world unless we
00:06:50 – give up what we stand for and turn
00:06:53 – ourselves into just another big country
00:06:55 – that bullies smaller neighbors which
00:07:02 – brings me to my final point our
00:07:06 – democracy
00:07:07 – our democracy is threatened
00:07:12 – whenever we take it for granted all of
00:07:18 – us
00:07:20 – regardless of party should be throwing
00:07:24 – ourselves into the task of rebuilding
00:07:26 – our democratic institutions when voting
00:07:34 – rates
00:07:35 – in America or some of the lowest among
00:07:37 – advanced democracies we should be making
00:07:39 – it easier not harder to vote
00:07:49 – when
00:07:52 – our institutions is low
00:07:57 – we should reduce the corrosive influence
00:08:00 – of money in our politics and insist on
00:08:03 – the principles of transparency and
00:08:05 – ethics in public service when Congress
00:08:10 – is dysfunctional we should draw our
00:08:14 – congressional districts to encourage
00:08:16 – politicians to cater to common sense and
00:08:18 – not rigid extreme
00:08:25 – but remember none of this happens on its
00:08:29 – own all of this depends on our
00:08:34 – participation on each of us accepting
00:08:38 – the responsibility of citizenship
00:08:41 – regardless of which way the pendulum of
00:08:44 – power happens to be swinging our
00:08:50 – Constitution is a remarkable beautiful
00:08:56 – gift but it's really just a piece of
00:09:02 – parchment it has no power on its own
00:09:07 – We the People give it power we the
00:09:13 – people give it meaning with our
00:09:16 – participation and with the choices that
00:09:18 – we make and the Alliance
00:09:22 – is what we Forge whether or not we stand
00:09:25 – up for our freedoms whether or not we
00:09:27 – respect and enforce the rule of law
00:09:31 – it's up to us
00:09:34 – America's no fragile thing but the gains
00:09:38 – of our long journey to freedom are not
00:09:40 – assured in his own farewell address
00:09:47 – George Washington wrote that
00:09:48 – self-government is the underpinning of
00:09:51 – our safety prosperity and liberty but
00:09:56 – from different causes and from different
00:10:00 – quarters much pains will be taken to
00:10:04 – weekend in your mind's the conviction of
00:10:06 – this truth and so we have to preserve
00:10:12 – this truth with jealous anxiety that we
00:10:15 – should reject the first dawning of every
00:10:18 – attempt to alienate any portion of our
00:10:21 – country from the rest or two in feeble
00:10:24 – the sacred ties that make us one
00:10:27 – [Applause]
00:10:35 – America weekend those ties when we allow
00:10:38 – our political dialogue to become so
00:10:40 – corrosive the people of good character
00:10:43 – are even willing to enter into public
00:10:45 – service so course with ranking the
00:10:50 – Americans with whom we disagree
00:10:52 – Arsene not just as misguided but as
00:10:56 – malevolent we weaken those times when we
00:11:01 – define some of us as more american than
00:11:03 – others when we write off the whole
00:11:06 – system as inevitably correct and when we
00:11:12 – sit back and blame the leaders we elect
00:11:17 – without examining our own role in
00:11:20 – selecting
00:11:31 – it falls to each of us to be those
00:11:35 – anxious jealous guardians of our
00:11:38 – democracy to embrace the joyous task
00:11:43 – we've been given to continually try to
00:11:47 – improve this great nation of ours
00:11:49 – because for all our our differences we
00:11:56 – in fact all share the same crowd type
00:11:59 – the most important office in a democracy
00:12:03 – citizen
00:12:17 – so you see that's what our democracy
00:12:21 – demands it needs you
00:12:24 – not just when there's an election not
00:12:29 – just when your own narrow interests is
00:12:31 – it state but over the full span of a
00:12:35 – lifetime if you're tired of arguing with
00:12:38 – strangers on the Internet try talking
00:12:43 – with one of them in real life
00:12:45 – [Applause]
00:12:58 – with something needs fixing then lace up
00:13:02 – your shoes and do some organizing
00:13:08 – if you're disappointed by your elected
00:13:10 – officials grab a clipboard get some
00:13:13 – signatures and run for office yourself
00:13:24 – show up dive in stay at it sometimes you
00:13:32 – win sometimes you lose
00:13:35 – presuming a reservoir goodness and other
00:13:40 – people that can be a risk and there will
00:13:44 – be times when the process will
00:13:45 – disappoint you but for those of us
00:13:50 – fortunate enough to have been part of
00:13:52 – this work and to see it up close
00:13:54 – let me tell you it can energize and
00:13:58 – inspire and more often than not your
00:14:01 – faith in America and in Americans will
00:14:07 – be confirmed mind sure has been over the
00:14:16 – course of these eight years
00:14:19 – I've seen the hopeful faces of young
00:14:21 – graduates and our newest military
00:14:24 – officers i have mourned with grieving
00:14:28 – families searching for answers and found
00:14:34 – grace and Charleston Church I've seen
00:14:38 – our scientists help a paralyzed man
00:14:40 – regain his sense of touch i've seen
00:14:44 – wounded warriors who at points were
00:14:49 – given up for dead walk again
00:14:52 – I've seen our doctors and volunteers
00:14:55 – rebuild after earthquakes and stop
00:14:57 – pandemics in their tracks
00:14:59 – I've seen the youngest of children
00:15:02 – remind us through their actions and
00:15:06 – through their generosity of our
00:15:08 – obligations to care for refugees or work
00:15:11 – for peace and above all to look out for
00:15:16 – each other
00:15:17 – [Applause]
00:15:22 – so that faith that I placed all those
00:15:24 – years ago
00:15:25 – not far from here in the power of
00:15:28 – ordinary Americans to bring about change
00:15:30 – that faith has been rewarded in ways i
00:15:35 – could not have possibly imagined and I
00:15:38 – hope your faith has to some of you here
00:15:41 – tonight or watching at home you were
00:15:44 – there with us in 2004 in 2008-2009
00:15:58 – maybe it's still can't believe we pulled
00:15:59 – this whole thing off
00:16:03 – let me tuck your not the only once
00:16:06 – Michelle
00:16:09 – [Applause]
00:16:38 – Michelle Devon Robinson girl of the cell
00:16:42 – said
00:16:50 – for the fat for the past 25 years you
00:16:53 – have not only been my wife and mother of
00:16:56 – my children you have been my best friend
00:17:07 – you took on a roll you didn't ask for
00:17:09 – and you made it your own with grace and
00:17:14 – with britt on the style
00:17:49 – we made the White House of place that
00:17:50 – belongs to everybody on the new
00:17:53 – generation sets its sights higher
00:17:55 – because it has you as a role model so
00:17:59 – you have made me proud
00:18:02 – and you have made the country proud
00:18:17 – Malia and Sasha under the strangest
00:18:22 – circumstances you had become too amazing
00:18:26 – young women who are smart and you are
00:18:30 – beautiful but more importantly you are
00:18:31 – kind and you are thoughtful and you are
00:18:34 – full of passion
00:18:45 – you're the burden of years in the
00:18:47 – spotlight so easily of all that I've
00:18:52 – done in my life I'm most proud to be
00:18:55 – your dad
00:18:56 – [Applause]
00:19:06 – to Joel
00:19:23 – scrap
00:19:24 – swing
00:19:27 – favorite son you were the first decision
00:19:33 – i made as a nominee and it was the best
00:19:37 – [Applause]
00:19:42 – you have been a great vice president but
00:19:45 – because in the bargain i gained a
00:19:46 – brother and we love you and Jill like
00:19:50 – family and your friendship has been one
00:19:52 – of the great joys of our last
00:19:54 – [Applause]
00:20:06 – to my remarkable strength for eight
00:20:11 – years and for some of you a whole lot
00:20:12 – more i have drawn from your energy and
00:20:18 – every day I try to reflect back what you
00:20:20 – displayed heart and character and
00:20:25 – idealism I've watched you grow up get
00:20:31 – married have kids start incredible new
00:20:35 – journeys of you your own even when times
00:20:40 – got tough and frustrating you never let
00:20:43 – Washington get the better of you guard
00:20:46 – against synthesis and the only thing
00:20:50 – that makes me prouder than all the good
00:20:52 – that we've done is the thought of all
00:20:55 – the amazing things that you are going to
00:20:57 – achieve from here
00:21:06 – [Applause]
00:21:09 – and all of you out there every organizer
00:21:12 – who moved to an unfamiliar town every
00:21:16 – kind family who welcomed them in every
00:21:19 – volunteer who knocked on doors every
00:21:21 – young person who cast a ballot for the
00:21:24 – first time every American who live and
00:21:28 – breathe the hard-working change you are
00:21:30 – the best supporters and organizers
00:21:33 – anybody could ever hope for
00:21:34 – and I will be forever grateful because
00:21:38 – you didn't change the world
00:21:41 – did
00:21:45 – and that's why I leave this stage
00:21:46 – tonight even more optimistic about this
00:21:50 – country than when we started because i
00:21:54 – know our work has not only helped so
00:21:56 – many Americans it has inspired so many
00:21:59 – Americans especially so many young
00:22:02 – people out there to believe that you can
00:22:05 – make a difference to hit your wagon to
00:22:08 – something bigger than yourselves let me
00:22:11 – tell you this generation coming up on
00:22:14 – selfish altruistic creative patriotic
00:22:18 – I've seen you in every corner of the
00:22:21 – country you believe in a fair and just
00:22:25 – and inclusive America you know the past
00:22:29 – and change has been America's whole mark
00:22:32 – that it's not something to fear but
00:22:34 – something in
00:22:35 – you going
00:22:37 – this hard work of democracy full you'll
00:22:41 – soon outnumber all of us and I believe
00:22:44 – as a result the future is in good hands
00:22:55 – my fellow Americans it has been the
00:23:01 – honor of my life to serve it i won't
00:23:05 – stop in fact I will be right there with
00:23:08 – you as a citizen for all my remaining
00:23:13 – days but for now whether you are young
00:23:18 – or whether you're young at heart I do
00:23:22 – have one final ask of you as your
00:23:24 – president the same thing I asked when
00:23:27 – you took a chance on me eight years ago
00:23:29 – i'm asking you to believe not in my
00:23:35 – ability to bring about change but in
00:23:37 – yours
00:23:37 – I'm asking you to hold fast to that
00:23:40 – faith written into our founding
00:23:42 – documents that idea whispered by slaves
00:23:47 – and abolitionist that spirit song by
00:23:50 – immigrants and homesteaders and those
00:23:52 – who marched for justice that Creed
00:23:55 – reaffirmed by those who planted flags
00:23:58 – from foreign battlefields to the surface
00:24:00 – of the Moon a created the core of every
00:24:03 – American whose story is not yet written
00:24:06 – yes we can this week
00:24:18 – [Applause]
